Abstract

Objective: To summarize dietary sources and bioavailability considerations for apigenin-rich foods. The review surveyed compositional studies and absorption data for parsley, chamomile, celery, and related plant foods, with attention to how food matrix, preparation method, and glycoside form affect exposure. Apigenin content varied substantially across cultivars and products, and brewed or processed preparations differed in measurable yield. Bioavailability was influenced by intestinal metabolism, conjugation, and individual dietary context, making systemic levels difficult to predict from food labels alone. The paper also noted that apigenin intake from normal diets is usually modest but can be higher in habitual consumers of herbal teas and specific vegetables. These findings help contextualize apigenin as a dietary phytochemical whose biologic effects may depend on repeated exposure and co-occurring flavonoids. The review supports standardized reporting of flavone content and more rigorous pharmacokinetic work to bridge food chemistry with human outcome research.
