Abstract

Objective: To review psychosocially assisted pharmacological treatment for opioid dependence and summarize clinical management principles for withdrawal, stabilization, and relapse prevention. The guidelines described how opioid dependence should be treated in structured care settings using medication-assisted approaches combined with counseling and psychosocial support. Acute withdrawal was presented as uncomfortable but manageable, while relapse and overdose risk were emphasized as major dangers after loss of tolerance. The document outlined practical considerations for treatment selection, monitoring, patient retention, and harm reduction, including the importance of individualized dosing and continuity of care. It also recognized that untreated dependence carries substantial medical and social consequences and that successful care often requires coordination across health systems. Although the recommendations were shaped by the evidence available at the time, the core principles remain influential: reduce withdrawal burden, stabilize physiology, and support long-term engagement to lower mortality and improve functioning. The guideline is a foundational public-health reference for opioid use disorder management.
