Abstract

Objective: To review the long-term tolerability and safety window of oral taurine exposure in humans and experimental systems. The authors synthesized data from supplementation studies, regulatory summaries, and pharmacologic assessments to determine whether chronic intake is associated with meaningful toxicity or cumulative adverse effects. Across the reviewed evidence, taurine was generally well tolerated at commonly used supplemental doses, with gastrointestinal complaints and nonspecific symptoms reported infrequently and usually without a clear causal pattern. Available studies did not identify consistent signals of hepatic, renal, or neurologic harm, although the number of long-duration trials was limited. The review also emphasizes that safety interpretation depends on baseline health, co-administered ingredients, and total daily exposure from diet and supplements. Overall, the literature supports a broad margin of tolerability for oral taurine in healthy adults, while noting that stronger evidence is needed for very high doses, vulnerable populations, and multi-ingredient products used over extended periods.
